Perez is known to have a troubled childhood due to physical, mental, and sexual abuse.

Rosie’s parents were in relationships with other people, before meeting each other and welcoming Perez into this world. Their troubled alliance and an array of children, made her paternal aunt take care of Rosie in her initial years.

Keeping dancing as her stress buster activity, she would often go to nightclubs while in college, that was the time when she got opportunities to work for Soul Train & Do The Right Thing.

The talented actress was even nominated for Oscars and Golden Globe for her outstanding performance in Fearless(1993).

Perez was also the official choreographer for the dance group called “Fly Girls” that got featured in “The Living Color”, a comedy show which aired on Fox TV.

Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune by Terrence McNally marked her Broadway debut.

During the shoot of an episode of the “Law & Order” series, Perez suffered serious injuries. She later filed a case against the producers claiming the manhandling as the reason for the same.

Due to her troubled childhood, Perez published her autobiography in the year 2014 by the name “Handbook for an Unpredictable Life: How I Survived Sister Renata and My Crazy Mother, and Still Came Out Smiling”. The book spoke about the impact that child abuse has had on her and the struggle that entailed overcoming it all.

Rosie has been an active social figure championing various causes. Coming from a multiracial ethnicity, she faced racism in Hollywood, the movie – “Yo soy Boricua, pa’que tu lo sepas! (I’m Puerto Rican, Just So You Know!)” talks about the same.

Her social work in the field of AIDS also landed her with an appointment at PACHA by Barack Obama in 2010. Unfortunately, she couldn’t do much when her mother was inflicted by the same disease and passed away after fighting her battle for 6 years.

Diagnosed with PTSD, Perez challenged herself to take medical help to cure the same. Coming from a Latino background worsened the situation due to the stigma associated with psychotherapy.

In a November 2020 interview, Perez revealed that almost a year ago, she was tested positive for coronavirus while she was shooting for her 2020 drama film,The Flight Attendant. Fortunately, she recovered from the virus and has said that the whole experience was “terrifying”.
